With its attractive climate, average year-round temperature of 23C, range of five-star and boutique hotels and host of unique experiences, the island of Tenerife is a great overall destination and agents on the latest ttgluxury Experience will be able to discover all this and more for themselves next February (7-11, 2019).
From charming 16th-century towns to stargazing in the company of an expert guide or experiencing a dolphin-spotting trip, Tenerife has a lot to offer, including whale-watching year-round.
The island has eight golf courses and is also the home of Teide, a mountain whose 3,718-metre summit makes it the highest point in Spain.
The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife will soon be even more accessible, with British Airways about to operate its largest ever flight schedule to the island. British Airways already flies year-round to Tenerife South airport, with a comfortable 4.5-hour journey and both Club Europe and Euro Traveller cabins available.
But from October 28 to March 31, flights from Gatwick to Tenerife will increase from eight a week to 13, with additional options every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter. British Airways also offers a flight from Heathrow every Saturday.
British Airways’ Club Europe option means travellers will have access to comfortable departure lounges at Gatwick and Heathrow, priority boarding, and spacious seating in a smaller, more private cabin, along with complimentary food and drink during the flight.
Euro Traveller offers a good-value economy option, with passengers able to select seats in advance for an extra fee, or pick them when online check-in opens 24 hours before the flight. Once onboard, you can purchase delicious drinks and snacks from M&S.
In the past two years, Tenerife has seen the construction of several new hotels, with two five-star and one four-star hotel adding to the island’s portfolio of high-end hotels.
Over the same amount of time, Tenerife has also seen the renovation of several hotels in the south and north of the island. You’ll also find a range of excellent villas on the island for clients who seek more privacy.
Meanwhile, wellness is a growing area of attraction and expertise too, with many excellent spa centres offering a range of treatments that use everything from volcanic rocks or seaweed, to wine therapy.
“As Tenerife has continued to reinvent itself year on year to move with market trends and consumer needs, we have seen excellent growth in the number of arrivals from the UK,” says Pia Louw, director of travel industry.
“Our visitor numbers from here are now in excess of two million per year, and this growth has been the most noticeable in the five-star and luxury sector. Building on the success of previous ttgluxury Experience trips in 2009 and 2012, this next one will give us the opportunity to show agents some of the new luxury hotels and attractions, as well as changes that have been made to some long-standing properties,” adds Louw.
Almost half of the island (48%) is protected in its natural state by the government, so imagine how beautiful the scenery can be. What’s more, the weather in Tenerife is a safe bet and travellers can head to the island at any time of year without worrying about what the weather will be like or what to pack.
It almost never rains in Tenerife, so the temperature is always pleasant. The island also benefits from a surprising number of micro-climates, which means the sun is always guaranteed on the island somewhere.
When it comes to dining out, local gastronomy in Tenerife is both simple and delicious, and there’s a wide range of establishments of various levels with different concepts. And whether it’s traditional food, international options or cutting edge creations in unique settings, there is plenty of choice across the island, including five Michelin-starred restaurants. The island even has a range of its own wines, which have a delicious volcanic character all of their own.
Many of these ideas can be found under the island’s own luxury brand, Tenerife Select, a collection of the very best suggestions for discerning travellers, and agents on this trip will be able to check some of these out when they fly with British Airways to the island, with the trip taking place February 7-11, 2019.
