The power of renewal

While something brand new will always catch a journalist’s eye when looking for a story, it is often those concerning renewal that can actually be more interesting.

Which is why Gulf Air’s story is so interesting as our interview with new CEO Kreimir Kucˇko shows on page 22. The airline was once the Middle East’s best known and most glamorous, before its regional rivals stole a massive march on it over the course of the last few decades.

However, with its rivals now facing a number of issues themselves, Kucˇko believes the time is right for Gulf Air to launch a comeback and while he doesn’t want to compete on size, he believes the product’s quality will set it aside. It will be interesting to see how the plan rolls out.

He will also be driving the revival in a region that is going through constant renewal as our focus on the Middle East (page 38) reveals. While the area’s aviation and tourism bosses might find themselves helpless in the face of certain issues, they are upgrading current facilities and attractions, as well as building new ones, to meet changing global consumer demand.

The same also applies to Brazil (page 44) where apparent signs of economic improvement are driving plans for growth among the country’s airports.

Renewal is also proving to be a major factor in British Airways’ plans for the future. BA boss Alex Cruz took to the stage at Routes Europe 2018 in Bilbao to describe how refurbishing its Boeing 777s will leave it better placed to compete against low-cost, long-haul rivals (page 28).

In addition, for those who missed Routes Europe 2018, full coverage of the event starts on page 17. Meanwhile, those looking forward to Routes Africa 2018 can also find out more about it on page 55.

In the meantime, I hope there are enough ideas in this Routes News to give you some ideas of how best to renew your own businesses and take them to the next level.
