Welcome to World Routes 2016, the 22nd World Route Development Forum, hosted by Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.
Chengdu’s increasing accessibility and dynamic economy have ensured that it is now recognised as a leading centre for foreign investment and development. Tax and investment incentives for foreign firms, together with low labour costs and high growth markets, have equipped Chengdu with a competitive edge to rival its costal counterparts Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong.
The city has always been recognised as a ‘land of abundance.’ Its GDP reached over 1.08 trillion Yuan in 2015, an increase of 7.3% on the previous year and a growth rate that was 1.1% higher than the national average. Human capital, central government support and development in major sectors such as logistics, finance and technology have all contributed to Chengdu’s economic growth.
A dynamic economy and the influx of some of the world’s most profitable companies has created a significant increase in demand for business travel.
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is mainland China’s fourth busiest aviation hub, serving 80 international destinations. Last year, the airport handled 42 million passengers and this number is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
The national Chinese aviation market is the second largest in the world and it is continuing to grow. The International Air Transport Association predicts that it will have become the busiest market by 2034 with 1.196 billion passengers a year.
Chinese airlines carried 440 million passengers last year, an 11% increase compared to 2014.
There are plans to build 66 new airports over the next five years to accommodate this rapid growth, one of which will be in Chengdu. When Chengdu Tianfu International Airport opens in 2019, the city’s capacity will grow to over 62 million passengers a year, offering huge development potential for the aviation industry.
This year’s World Routes welcome over 3,000 delegates, all here to meet and discuss future air service opportunities. This year’s extensive conference programme will feature the World Routes Strategy Summit, Tourism Summit and Routes Talks. Each will cover a number of global issues affecting the aviation and tourism industries with a host of esteemed speakers and experts presenting.
We’re very grateful to this year’s host, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and their partners for their dedication and the hard work they have put into delivering this year’s event.
I hope that you will take the time to explore the city, as well as take advantage of the many networking and educational opportunities at World Routes. Thank you for being part of Routes and this dynamic community. I hope you have a very productive few days and enjoy World Routes 2016.
