Nikko, and the surrounding area, has long been known as a holy place and was deemed Unesco worthy due to the cultural, religious, and architectural significance of its decorated temples.

The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is owned by Tobu Railway Co. and is expected to open in 2020 around two hours north of Tokyo.

“We will be working to curate a Nikko experience that truly showcases what is special about this destination while bringing to life and honouring its Unesco heritage,” said Lisa Holladay, global brand leader for The Ritz-Carlton.

Highlights of the Nikki area include the Kegon Falls and many famous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, with the 94-room hotel being built along the East end of Lake Chuzenji and South of Mount Nantai.

“Through The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko we hope to introduce the various Nikko attractions to both Japanese and international visitors, eventually contributing to the strength of the Japanese tourism industry,” added Yoshizumi Nezu, president of Tobu Railway Co.

All guestrooms and suites are being designed to maximise views of either Lake Chuzenji or Mount Nantai.

A Ritz-Carlton Spa will offer traditional-style treatment rooms as well as Onsen – Japanese hot springs to bathe in.

Ritz-Carlton already has four hotels in Japan - in Kyoto, Okinawa, Osaka and Tokyo.
