Search behaviour reveals importance of eco-tourism and wellness

Travel industry is set to reach an “eco-conscious crossroad” in 2020

The picture-sharing platform’s annual report, Pinterest 100, uses search data of its 320 million users to predict what people will be interested in over the coming year.

It compared global search volumes from August 2017 to July 2018 with August 2018 to July 2019 to identify 100 topics with significant search volumes and consistent, upward growth.

Pinterest 100 found a 107% increase in searches for train travel, 38% hike in “staycation” destinations, and an 86% rise in reduced carbon footprint trips.

There were 48% more searches for zero-waste products, 57% more people looking at agri-tourism and 31% exploring eco-structures such as treehouse retreats.

The research has also revealed conscious consumption is on the rise, with more consumers looking for zero-waste products, and holistic wellness is becoming more popular, such as to spas or retreats.

“When Pinners want new ideas, they come to Pinterest first,” said Pinterest 100. “It’s where they get inspiration, find new dreams and plan for what matters most.

“And every time someone searches on Pinterest, they’re thinking about what they want to try next.

“Multiply that behaviour by the more than 320 million people using Pinterest all over the world and you get a unique insight into emerging trends.”
