British Virgin Islands thanks travel industry for Hurricane Irma support

The BVI said that the UK travel industry has shown "significant generosity and support" to the relief efforts, raising funds, volunteering time and donating aid supplies.

On September 6, the category five hurricane impacted the British Virgin Islands with sustained winds of 185mph causing widespread damage across the territory.

Ginny Hawksley from the BVI Tourist Board in London, said: ‘‘It’s been quite emotional and encouraging to see the BVI love from so many people.

"We have had many donations from the UK travel industry, family and friends as well as from people who remain anonymous which I find hard as I really want to thank them."

Two shipping containers donated by Kestral Liner Agencies are also set to depart to the BVI filled with aid supplies on September 29.

Carol Hay, director of marketing for UK Europe Caribbean Tourism Organisation, said: “We have seen some outstanding efforts over the past two weeks to raise funds and collect essential items for those displaced by the recent hurricanes.

"Ginny Hawksley and her team at BVI House have been amazing in their efforts to the point that they have offered to share some of the supplies with Dominica.

"The camaraderie and support is a true reflection of the warmth that the region is known for, even in adverse times."
