“We are trying to adapt to the needs of the new customer and move forward into the future.”

On the sun-kissed island of Majorca, exciting changes are taking place. Iberostar is edging closer to the July 15 opening of a new five-star hotel – the hotel group’s first Grand Collection property in the Med.

Fusing forward-thinking design, eco-friendly management and innovative beauty treatments, the Grand Hotel Portal Nous looks set to deliver a unique client experience.

Over coffee and churros in London, Oscar Gonzalez, marketing director for Iberostar Hotels and Resorts, told me that the 66-room property is targeting a new generation.

“We are trying to adapt to the needs of the new customer and move forward into the future,” he said.

Sustainable management features include heat insulation glass windows that reflect sunlight to ensure unspoilt views, geothermal heating that uses the ground’s heat to generate hot and cold water, and saltwater chlorination technology to recycle seawater for the hotel pools.

Transport arranged by the hotel has also gone green with each of the four penthouse suites including use of a BMW i3 electric car.

Grand Hotel Portal Nous is awash with postmodern edginess, a trademark of designer Marcel Wanders, who crafted the hotel’s image. Responsible for Louis Vuitton store window displays and billed by the New York Times as the Lady GaGa of design, the Dutchman took perfection to the next level.

“When he saw the finished build of the spa, he didn’t like it. He made the builders tear up the floor, which had been meticulously laid brick by brick, and start it again,” Gonzalez said.

Wanders has also applied his skills in the appearance of the hotel’s six themed suites, priced from €633 per person per night. The Heritage Suite is decked out in antiques and classic art to evoke the appearance of the most glamorous hotels of the last century. For lovers of space, the Stargazer Suite with its star-map floor and telescope allows uninhibited views of the Majorcan sky. Relaxation is key in the Spa Suite and clients can make use of their own indoor spa and private pool, while the Games Suite has board games, a PlayStation 4 and a putting green.

Perhaps the most taboo are the two Naughty Suites. With a dancing pole, a bed with a mirrored ceiling and a large bath with a glass shower enclosure, sensuality is a top priority.

“These particular rooms have been completely booked up. They really seem to have struck a chord with people,” Gonzalez said.

Forward-thinking principles are evident in the in-house Skin Inc spa too. Laura Giron Ortiz, general director of Skin Inc, said the spa aims to offer uniqueness through innovation. “In our spas, you will live and breathe technology. We are looking to the future through

the use of machines.

“We use radio frequencies to stop the ageing process. Oxygen plays a big role too. Air in the treatment rooms has been filtered so it is as pure as possible. Machines also check clients’ hydration levels, skin pigmentation and the length of wrinkles to make the experience as personal as possible.”

Pricing is set at €150 for a single treatment, €450 for a half-day and €5,000 for seven-day access to the spa’s high-tech gadgets. Giron believes the spa fits in well with the hotel’s overarching theme of innovation rather than indulgence.

“Our product is less about the gold and caviar elements of luxury – it’s about results. We want to put the ‘you’ back in beauty,” she said.

Food and drink options also have a healthy slant, with a wellness bar offering smoothies and juices. All produce served here and in gourmet restaurant Astir will be locally sourced to ensure freshness, said Gonzalez. “A fish could be caught that morning and you could have it for dinner the same night,” he said.

Grand Hotel Portal Nous is a shining example of modernity in the hospitality sector and should inspire other hotel chains to follow suit. Social media junkies of the millennial generation will have plenty to tweet about here – but maybe not if they’re staying in the Naughty Suite.
