The cash injection, part of Quebec’s Maritime Strategy, will help fund the rejuvenation of the Alexandra Pier and Iberville Passenger Terminal in time for the 2017 cruise season.
Improvements include the building of a green rooftop terrace on the Iberville Terminal and the lowering of the Alexandra Pier for easier access to the river.
An observation tower overlooking the Saint Lawrence is also planned however construction will not be complete until 2019.
Quebec’s government have now provided £14 million while the city of Montreal added a further £10 million towards the plan. Total costs are estimated to reach £54 million.
The port currently welcomes 100,000 passengers a year from cruise lines such as Oceania, Regent and Crystal.
Jean D’Amour, minister of maritime affairs in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region said: “The 2015-2030 Maritime Strategy is one of the major pillars of Quebec’s economic plan, and drawing attention to the tourist vocation of the St. Lawrence is a major component of this strategy.”
Seven million visitors a year visit the port area generating £1.5 million. It is predicted the strategy will create 30,000 jobs in Montreal by 2030.
The 100-year-old Alexandra pier was last refurbished for Expo 67.
Sylvie Vachon, chief executive officer for the Montreal Port Authority, expressed her gratitude for the funding.
She said: "These improved infrastructures will meet clients’ needs and give Montrealers renewed access to our majestic Saint Lawrence River for 2017, a year brimming with symbols and festivities for Montreal."
