Abta has unveiled its annual Make Holidays Greener summer campaign in partnership with Travelife for Accommodation.
Its “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” theme follows on from last year’s “say no to plastic” topic.
As well as plastics, this year’s campaign will address managing waste, including food waste, from a broader perspective.
Abta’s latest research shows more than a third (36%) of people would now choose one travel provider over another if they had a better environmental/sustainability record, compared to a fifth in 2011.
Travel companies can get involved in a number of ways, from looking at recycling in-destination and reducing food waste to finding credible alternatives for single-use plastics.
This year’s campaign will launch on June 5, World Environment Day, and will run until the end of September.
Abta and Travelife for Accommodation will be available to offer advice and guidance to the industry in the lead-up to the launch and throughout the campaign.
A support pack has been developed and shared with travel agents, tour operators, destinations and accommodation providers.
Nikki White, Abta director of destinations and sustainability, said: “By testing out new initiatives, businesses can work towards achieving ‘the circular economy’ – where resources would be in use for as long as possible and we minimise waste or pollution.”
