'Action needed for disabled travellers'

Sustainable tourism specialist Responsible Travel has revealed the latest chapter in its manifesto for the future of tourism, which reports the industry is failing people with accessibility requirements.

The company, which says one in seven people in the UK lives with a disabling condition, claims on average UK adults with a disability travel just over half the distance of those without a disability and three-quarters of people with mental health issues say their disability has stopped them travelling.

Responsible Travel claims action is urgently needed, starting with travel companies publishing information on which trips are accessible and for whom.

Chief executive Justin Francis said: “This presents the tourism industry with a huge opportunity – to not only do the right thing but also realise the untapped potential in the £250 billion purple pound.”
