The man who lost his long-running legal battle after he took his daughter on a term-time holiday now faces a £2,000 legal bill after the case went all the way to the Supreme Court.
Jon Platt had initially successfully challenged a £120 fine for taking his young daughter to Disney World Florida.
Last week he found himself back at his local magistrates’ court – which had originally ruled in his favour - after the Supreme Court ruled against him in April following successive challenges by his local council.
As well as being ordered to pay costs, Platt was also given a 12-month conditional discharge when he appeared in court on the Isle of Wight, where the hearing was told that the whole affair had cost taxpayers £140,000.
Platt was convicted of failing to secure a child’s regular attendance. The case means more parents will be reluctant to take children out of school in term-time to avoid price rises during the school holiday period.
Lawyers for Isle of Wight Council had argued that his daughter’s good attendance record did not mean he could take her out of school.
