Clia conference to explore technology sub-theme

The cruise sector’s relationship with technology will be a sub-theme of this year’s Clia UK & Ireland annual conference.

Delegates will also hear updates on the latest tech investments from member cruise lines during the May event

Sessions and speakers at the event in May will be centred on the topic “encompassing all angles of the industry”, the association said, including ship design, onboard initiatives and updates on the latest technological investments from member cruise lines.

The choosing of the subject follows a number of advancements in the sector in recent years such as wearable technology, facial recognition software, the use of apps and robots as well as cruise’s ongoing environmental efforts.

Andy Harmer, senior vice-president membership and UK & Ireland director, said: “Technology will be running as a sub-theme of the conference, alongside the main #GenerationCruise focus. There’s no denying that in 2018, and beyond, technology is a crucial part of our everyday lives, and this is mirrored in customers’ increasing demands for a seamless experience whilst on holiday.

“The cruise industry is often taking the lead in the introduction of new technology to enhance the holiday experience and is widely being rolled out by a number of cruise lines and across fleets. Sessions at the conference will look at how technology is impacting ship design and the experience onboard, plus how technology can be used to engage a new cruise customer. “

Keynote speakers for the 12th annual conference, held on May 23-25 in Southampton, will be announced over the next few weeks.

During the event, delegates will be able to take part in a trade fair on May 23 and a full-day of conference and networking sessions followed by a gala dinner on May 24.

The conference will then close on May 25, onboard Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess, followed by the opportunity to tour the ship.
