Thomas Cook Group chief of product and operations Chris Mottershead paid homage to the “amazing” work of resort reps during an acceptance speech last night (October 18).
Mottershead, who has held roles including UK managing director for both Cook and Tui during his long career, gave a heartfelt thanks to reps in-resort while accepting the ITT’s Odyssey Award.
He told guests at the ITT @ The Dorchester dinner: “It’s a joy to be part of the travel industry and I’ve been lucky to be part of it for so many years.” Mottersead began in the industry in June 1990 at Aspro, which was then sold to Airtours.
“More recently, as I’ve moved away from the general management role and taken responsibility for overseas it reminds me of what we do in this business,” said Mottershead.
“It’s not about selling holidays or the technology behind them… sometimes we get lost in that… it’s about the experience itself.
“Seeing the reps in resort is quite amazing, to see these young people, who are very experienced as well, taking care of our customers and making sure they have the very best experience.
“At the same time, what they have to deal with is quite incredible. When things go wrong – somebody’s ill, maybe somebody’s died – they are on hand to create care and comfort for those people they are looking after.
“It’s quite an amazing job, it’s very special and these are the real heroes of our industry today.”
Mottersehead described receiving the award as a “fantastic honour and special moment”.
He also thanked his wife and children, who have moved “all over the place” due to his various roles.
