Cruise lines with sailings along the French Riviera have cancelled calls and excursions to Nice in the wake of a terror attack that left 84 people dead.
Royal Caribbean International’s Navigator of the Seas was due to visit the French city today (July 15) but spent the day at sea following the attack which saw a lorry driven along the promenade into groups of Bastille Day revellers.
Its sister line Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Constellation, which was due to visit Nice tomorrow, will also not dock in the destination.
In a statement a spokesperson for the lines said: “Like all of you, Royal Caribbean is aware of the attack that occurred in Nice, France. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.
“After reviewing all of the available information and along with discussions with our Global Security team in Miami, we have decided to cancel our next two calls to Nice. Navigator of the Seas was scheduled to visit Nice on Friday, July 15. Instead, the ship will spend the day at sea.
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation in France and will contact guests or their travel agents should we make any additional changes to upcoming itineraries. Whether or not we call to Nice will always be driven by our concern for the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members.”
Meanwhile, P&O Cruises’ Ventura docked in Cannes today as scheduled, although according to a spokesperson for the line: “Organised shore excursions to Nice have been cancelled and guests have been advised to avoid Nice town centre.”
