Facebook group helps reps reconnect and tackle mental health issues

A Facebook group for holiday reps has grown to nearly 18,000 members in less than two months, with its founder reporting a positive impact on the mental wellbeing of former resort workers.

The “Stories of a Holiday Rep” page was launched on 29 April by Sam Lupson (pictured), a former holiday worker with Thomas Cook’s JMC brand.

Members must have worked overseas as a rep in order to join and can either apply for membership or be invited.

Thanks to its popularity, a reunion event in Manchester for about 1,000 people is planned for November.

Lupson, who began his career in 2000 as an 18-year-old rep in Menorca, initially launched the page for fun with “about 20” friends and ex-colleagues as members.

It grew to 800 people “overnight” and has had more than 1.1 million comments and posts in the past eight weeks.

“There’s a real energy and fun with everyone reminiscing,” he told TTG.

The group helps old colleagues reconnect and also supports those struggling with their mental health, Lupson said.

“We have had a lot of messages from people who have found it hard since they gave up repping.

“You can become a bit of celebrity in-resort, and it can be difficult to adjust when you come back to the UK.

“Back in the 1980s and 90s there was no Facebook, so it wasn’t as easy to stay in contact. Lots of friendships are rekindling in the group now so it’s really special.”

Lupson is now head of overseas operations for Hangout on Holiday – a recently launched rep communication app.

The reunion party will give former resort workers “the chance to be a rep again for the night”, Lupson said, with fancy dress and 80s and 90s music.
