British travellers heading to Turkey have been warned to “exercise vigilance and caution” following a terror attack on an Istanbul nightclub.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has amended its travel advice to the destination in the wake of the shooting at Reina nightclub in the early hours of New Year’s Day, which killed 39 people.
The FCO said: “On 1 January, there was an attack on the Reina nightclub in Ortakoy, Istanbul, causing a large number of casualties.
“There is an ongoing police operation in Istanbul as a result of the attack, and the attacker may still be at large. You should exercise vigilance and caution at this time, and follow the advice and instructions of the security authorities.”
At least 600 revellers were celebrating in the nightclub when a gunman entered and opened fire.
Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident intensifies security operations in the Turkish city, with around 17,000 police officers placed on duty following a string of terror attacks including a bombing outside a football stadium last month which killed 44 people.
