Malaysia Airlines MH17 missile suspects charged

Dutch authorities have named four men wanted in connection with the downing of a Malaysia Airlines flight by a missile in 2014.

Russian separatists alleged to have brought down flight MH17 named

Flight MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down over Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 onboard the Boeing 777. Among the dead were 80 children.

Three of those wanted are connected with the Russian military or intelligence services and the fourth is a Ukrainian with no military background. They were named as Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinskiy, Oleg Pulatov and Leonid Kharchenko. All have been charged with murder.

The trial of the four men will begin on 9 March next year although none of the suspects has been apprehended and they are unlikely to surrender to arrest warrants. It is thought others may be identified as the investigation continues.

Investigators have blamed separatists using a Russian-made missile. Russia has denied any involvement, but Dutch prosecutors are filing a case in a Netherlands court.

The 777 was brought down about four hours into the flight about 30 miles from the Russia-Ukraine border in an area controlled by separatists.

An alliance of investigators from the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine has been working on the case. Last year, the Netherlands said it held Russia responsible.
