Norwegian Air has set up a South American subsidiary, signalling the start of flights to the region from Gatwick.
A new company, Norwegian Air Argentina was established this week, with three members of a local law firm named as its board members, according to reports.
Last autumn TTG revealed that the Argentine capital Buenos Aires was one planned route from the UK by the airline.
Previous reports have also indicated that Norwegian plans to base a short-haul fleet of between six and 10 aircraft at several Argentine cities.
The setting up of a new Argentine company would allow Norwegian to operate internal flights as well as long-haul.
In December, the airline’s chief commercial officer Thomas Ramdahl told TTG that Buenos Aires and Havana were two of the next destinations to be launched from the UK, with a prospective start date of November 2017.
A Norwegian spokesperson said: “As an ambitious airline with a huge aircraft order, we have made no secret of our plans to expand our operation to other parts of the world, including the South American market which is characterised by little competition and high prices.
"As part of this we can confirm that a new company, Norwegian Air Argentina, has been established to allow us to explore opportunities to enter the Argentinean market, though this is at a very early stage and no routes are confirmed at present.”
