With a decision looming on whether Ryanair will have to sell its stake in Aer Lingus, it appears the tension might be too much for “Europe’s only ultra low cost carrier”
Yesterday, Aer Lingus attempted to indulge in bit some light-hearted chatter with its rival by pointing out that a picture on Ryanair’s website was actually of an Aer Lingus jet.
Ryanair didn’t manage to see the funny side:
The Twitter conversation continued with Aer Lingus describing the competition as “healthy rivalry”.
Ryanair did not agree.
“We stopped being rivals in the 90s. We’d have to treble our fares and lose 81m customers to be your rival #EuropesNo1,” it tweeted.
Competition authorities have told Ryanair to sell down its stake to around 5% but the airline has appealed each time.
