Thai authorities investigating a string of bomb attacks that targeted tourist areas in the country have reportedly asked the Malaysia government for help.
Authorities are attempting to track down the owner of a mobile phone used to detonate one of several explosive devices during the wave of bombings which killed four people and injured 35 last week.
Malaysia’s state news agency, Bernama, said on Sunday (August 14) it believed the owner of the phone, discovered at one of the blast sites on Phuket, was "said to be from Malaysia", reported Aljazeera.
According to the news agency, the device was only partly damaged in the explosion – leaving its serial number visible for investigators to read.
The number was registered with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, a body that oversees phone and online activities in the country.
Thai police have now passed on the phone fragment to Malaysian authorities for further analysis, Aljazeera added.
Thai police have also told reporters they believe the attack was carried out by a single person, adding that authorities "know who to blame" but are yet to reveal a culprit.
"Our investigation is progressing. We know who was behind it," deputy national police spokesperson Piyapan Pingmuang told AFP news agency.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, which hit seven of the country’s southern provinces.
Police also confirmed yesterday the discovery and defusing of more devices in Hua Hin and Phuket.
"It is likely they were intended to explode at the same time of the previous explosions," said Thai interior ministry spokesperson Grisada Boonrach.
At least three men have been questioned following the attacks, Aljazeera reports – with a spokesperson for Thailand’s military government confirming that multiple people have been interviewed but are not yet considered suspects.
"It’s just asking questions. They will not be treated as suspects unless the questioning procedure is done and any of them are found to have violated laws," added Colonel Winthai Suvaree.
