Thousands of people in central Italy have been left homeless after the country’s most powerful earthquake for 36 years.
At least 15,000 people are estimated to be in temporary accommodation following the quake – the fourth to strike the region of Umbria in three months.
The 6.6-magnitude quake hit on October 30, close to the area where nearly 300 people were killed by a tremor in August.
There have been no reports of fatalities around the tremor’s epicentre near the town of Norcia, but around 20 people are said to have been injured.
The medieval basilica of St Benedict in the town was among a number of historical buildings to be destroyed.
Experts believe an evacuation of vulnerable buildings held last week in response to strong aftershocks from August’s quake may have helped save lives.
Other towns and villages to have also suffered damage include Castelsantangelo, Preci, Ussita and Arquata.
Tremors from the latest earthquake were also felt in Rome, where the city’s Metro system was shut down but has since reopened.
Since the initial quake the area has suffered a number of powerful aftershocks, including a tremor measuring 4.2 in magnitude.
Prime minister Matteo Renzi is currently chairing emergency cabinet meetings to discuss emergency reconstruction efforts.
Italy specialist operator Citalia said: “We can confirm that we do not have any customers in Norcia where yesterday’s earthquake sadly struck.
"As a matter of courtesy, our dedicated resort team have been contacting all of our customers in Rome, where the earthquake was felt and we will of course continue to monitor the situation.
"Our thoughts at this time are with Italy, its loss of history, and the many people that have been sadly affected by this tragedy.
“Undoubtedly, devastating events such as these will always have an immediate effect on bookings. However, Italy is a country like no other, seeped in history and charm that holidaymakers have a genuine passion for. After the earthquake back in August, we continued to see agents and customers share our same love for the country and book holidays all over Italy.”
