University of Bristol caretaker Herman Gordon and his wife Denise spent two nights at Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort & Private Island in Montego Bay after over 230 students and supporters raised £1,500.
It was the first time Herman, who has worked at the university for 12 years, had been able to return to his home country for almost a decade.
He came to the UK aged 12 as part of the Windrush generation.
Video footage of his reaction as he was presented with the cash for his flights by the student who organised the collection went viral in June.
During their break, the Gordon’s enjoyed a couple’s massage and a private candlelit dinner on the beach as a belated 23rd wedding anniversary celebration.
The pair also plans to visit family in Kingston while on the island.
It was also a night worth celebrating for Sandals, as the Caribbean resort specialist scooped three gongs at the 2018 TTG Travel Awards yesterday (September 17).
The operator claimed Travel Company of the Year and Hotel and Resort Operator of the Year, while Sandals’ Neil Read took home the night’s On the Road Hero accolade.
