Thailand will start to lift its coronavirus lockdown next month before reopening to international travel from 1 July.
Somsak Rungsita, head of the country’s National Security Council, confirmed the move would constitute a complete reopening of the country, according to the Bangkok Post.
Stringent health and safety and sanitation measures will be enforced, including the use of face masks, heightened hand hygiene and continued social distancing.
Thailand’s government will slowly relax its coronavirus restrictions during June in phases, including lifting curbs on domestic travel, before reopening to overseas visitors from the start of July.
Full details of plans to resume business and economic operations in Thailand were due to be confirmed on Friday (29 May).
Thailand’s tourism sector has been preparing for lockdown measures to be lifted for several weeks, with hotels and hospitality groups carrying out deep cleans and introducing new protective measures such as screens for staff, contactless technology and social distancing signage and markings, while beaches have been cleaned up.
