Thomas Cook ceased operating and entered liquidation on 23 September. The iconic operator was unable to secure an additional £200 million funding required to unlock a £900 million rescue deal. The failure triggered the UK's largest peacetime repatriation operation, with more than 150,000 passengers left stranded overseas. Cook employed 22,000 group-wide, 9,000 of whom were in the UK.
