Fingal, sister ship to The Royal Yacht Britannia, has opened in Edinburgh after a £5 million conversion, writes Stephen Glennon.

It features 23 cabins, a ballroom with dining space for up to 80 guests and a bar and restaurant.

The cabins range from a standard double to a luxury duplex, and the Skerryvore penthouse suite which features its own private dining area and deck.

Each cabin is named after a lighthouse designed by Robert Stevenson and every cabin is unique thanks to the ship’s distinct shape.

Fingal is a former Northern Lighthouse Board ship and was built in Glasgow in 1963, the final ship built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company.

It spent its seafaring life primarily in Oban and Stromness in the Orkney Islands, sailing through stormy seas to transport equipment and supplies to and from some of the most remote lighthouses in Scotland.

Its new life as a luxury hotel began on January 7, 2019.
