Thomson Airways’ new long-haul aircraft may feature a children’s play area following a suggestion from a four-year-old.
Amber Winters from Birmingham won a nationwide competition to become Thomson Airways’ first ever Child Ambassador. She was chosen for her suggestion to name the aircraft Pixie Dust and her idea to have a children’s area including beanbags and a reading corner at the back of the aircraft.
The airline said it would trial “some of Amber’s suggestions on-board”.
As part of the airline’s #NameOurPlane competition, Thomson Airways asked youngsters aged four to 11 to suggest a name for its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and to provide ideas on how it could make it better for children.
Amber was one of 10 finalists to attend a special Ambassador Day at Gatwick airport to put forward her child-friendly innovation ideas to a special panel of judges. The youngsters were also given a tour of the new aircraft with Thomson Airways pilot Stuart Gruber.
As a reward, Amber will jet off on the aircraft with her family to Thomson’s 5T Sensatori Resort Mexico during February half term.
Stuart Gruber, Thomson Airlines’ director of flight operations said: “All of our finalists had some fantastic ideas, so it was a really hard decision selecting our overall winner.
“We felt that Pixie Dust was a great name for an aircraft that takes millions of families away every year and that it sums up the magic that our employees add to each customer’s holiday experience. We’re looking forward to trialling some of Amber’s suggestions on-board the new aircraft.”
Amber said: “My favourite part of the day was meeting the cabin crew and captain Stuart, as well as visiting the cockpit and getting to dress as a pilot. I’ve never been to Mexico, so I can’t wait to spend time with my family!”
New research by the airline asked children what their top gripes were when it came to flying, with being stuck in their seat, being bored, and their ears hurting topping the list.
When asked what they really want on a flight, more than 40% simply said unlimited chocolate and sweets, with the same amount requesting free toys, while around one in 10 said they would love the cabin crew to be dressed in fancy dress. Other ideas included an arts and crafts area (26%), a soft play area (24%), a slide inside the cabin (18%), a football pitch (10%), a dress up or make up room (9%), and a skate park (7%).
