In the sunny heart of British Columbia, a cluster of mountains embrace the hamlet resort community of Sun Peaks. The locals are passionate about the laid-back mountain lifestyle and welcome guests not as tourists, but as part of their community. Driving to Sun Peaks from Vancouver takes around four hours and once in-resort, almost everything is within easy walking distance.
An assortment of more than 40 restaurants, shops and cafes line the pedestrian-only village where a selection of hotels and lodging can also be found. Guests who favour camping can park their RVs just steps away from the village where they can enjoy all the amenities and activities from the comfort of their mobile home.
From July to August, the alpine landscape floods with a sea of wildflowers. Hikers can ride the Sunburst Express chairlift up Mount Tod, where they’re greeted with the scenery, smells and quiet that the mountains of British Columbia are so famously known for. An assortment of guided hikes are available, ranging from mellow strolls to challenging alpine treks. Yogis can further their connection to nature in an alpine yoga class held mid-mountain at a remote location.
Mountain biking in Sun Peaks will, for the first time this summer, expand to all three mountains. After a $1.5 million investment, the first-rate Sun Peaks Bike Park will expand to Sundance Mountain, opening a second summer chairlift and almost 12 miles of new downhill trails. Mount Morrisey expands its free pedal-access network by 7.5 miles, offering bikers and hikers a 3.7-mile climb trail and 1.2-mile viewpoint trail.
Alongside hiking and biking, Sun Peaks offers a diverse array of activities that the whole family will be keen to jump on. This June, Cleavage Axe Co has opened its doors as the first axe-throwing company in Sun Peaks, with eight throwing lanes for those aged 10 and above.
Guests can test their swing at British Columbia’s highest elevation course at the Sun Peaks Golf Course, a challenging 18-hole, par 72 Graham Cooke-designed course. For the travellers who enjoy the serenity of Canadian lakes, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent on scenic McGillivray Lake, which is a short 10-minute drive from the village.
The warm community and thrilling selection of mountain activities makes Sun Peaks an easy travel destination. The stress that comes with elaborate planning for family holidays isn’t necessary – book accommodation, choose activities and experience the laid-back, friendly community of Sun Peaks.
