From December to March, St Helena welcomes a comfortable summer climate with an average temperature of 23°C, marking the beginning of the diving season. Marine life including devil rays, endemic butterfly fish, turtles and ocean surgeonfish can be found in St Helena’s waters during these months (there are 800 marine species, including at least 18 endemics!).
December welcomes the arrival of the infamous gentle giants, whale sharks, to St Helena, with snorkelling trips offered throughout the season. The dry weather also allows visitors to explore the island’s scenic walking routes including 21 Post Box Walks.
From December to the end of March, visitors can participate in the St Helena Festival of Walking, which is a perfect opportunity for both visitors and locals to explore the island’s stunning hikes and trails.
The island typically experiences higher rainfall and temperatures under 20°C in the cooler months, between April and September.
As the season changes, winter welcomes humpback whales to St Helena’s waters, with tours available to spot these majestic creatures. Unique off-season events include the anniversary of Napoleon’s death and St Helena’s Day, to celebrate the discovery of the island in 1502.
While birdwatching is a year-round activity, September is the best time for it, with the month promising many sightings including those of the endemic St Helena wirebird.
