Tenerife has been one of the destinations leading Spain’s recovery from the pandemic, with the number of UK visitors in the first seven months of the year reaching 943,000, which put it well ahead of the other key sources markets of Spain (583,000) and Germany (211,000).
The island welcomed a total of 2.66 million visitors between January and July 2022 as it mounted a strong recovery from Covid.
Tenerife hopes to continue this positive momentum into the key winter season, with the island’s tourism office focusing its marketing efforts on events such as the Tenerife Carnival, taking place in Santa Cruz from 20 January to 26 February 2023, and its increasing range of responsible tourism products.
David Perez, chief executive of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, said: “Tenerife invites travellers to explore the destination from a different perspective: by joining the Tenerife Carnival, the world’s second biggest after Rio; by hiking to the majestic Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak; or by mingling with the friendly locals in the north of the island.
“Tenerife, as a Biosphere Tourism Destination by the Responsible Tourism Institute, also offers eco-conscious travellers peace of mind as the island is truly committed to conservation and preservation, and is integrating sustainability as a structural part of its development.”
Sustainable tourism initiatives in the spotlight include Tenerife’s new status as the first Unesco Whale Heritage Sites in Europe for a stretch of southwestern coastline where both whales and dolphins can be spotted.
Tenerife is also home to more than 800 types of fauna and flora, as well as being visited by more than 200 species of birds.
Other attractions include stargazing in Teide national park and organic wine tasting at the Ferrera Bodega vineyard in southern Tenerife.
