Germany has lifted its restrictions on flights to Sharm el Sheikh allowing services to the Egyptian resort to resume from German airports.
Egyptian tourism officials used the decision to call for other countries, such as the UK, to lift their bans on flying to Sharm el Sheikh.
The German Ministry of Transport made the decision to ease check-in luggage restrictions on Sharm flights shortly after the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) urged governments to lift bans on flights to Egypt.
Governments banned flights to Sharm el Sheikh’s airport following the downing of a Russian passenger plane in October last year. UK flights have not operated to Sharm since November 17.
The UK Foreign Office continues to advise “against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh”.
Egyptian tourism minister Yehia Rashed said: “This is wonderful news for German tourists and for Egyptian tourism. This will enable even more German tourists to visit our country and will be very welcome news for Sharm el Sheikh."
Currently, Thomas Cook has cancelled all bookings to Sharm el Sheikh until November 1 while all Tui flights to the resort have been axed until September 29. EasyJet will not operate any flights to Sharm until the start of the winter season in October.
Some 224 Russian passengers and crew were killed when a Metrojet charter flight was allegedly brought down by an explosive device shortly after taking off from Sharm el Sheikh airport on October 31, 2015.
