Hurtigruten passengers sailing on the line’s newest ships will be able to watch the marine life below on TV screens following the installation of new drone technology.
With 90% of the world’s oceans relatively unknown, Hurtigruten aims to take guests to “areas less explored than the surface of Mars”, and will share its material with scientists.
Working closely with Norwegian start-up Blueye Robotics, the line will introduce underwater drones on all Hurtigruten expedition ships, including the hybrid-powered Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen.
The Blueye Pioneer drone features four thrusters and an HD wide-angled video camera, which will allow guests to view true-colour videos, streamed live to screens on the Hurtigruten ships and digital diving masks worn by guests in smaller explorer boats.
Anthony Daniels, head of sales UK and Ireland, said: “With the introduction of underwater drones, we are adding a new dimension for our guests, which provides the opportunity for the adventurous ones to become real explorers.”
Daniels added: “The drone experience will offer passengers a unique perspective of the depths of the ocean and educate them on the importance of looking after the sea.”
