Day 1: Thursday leave London Heathrow on an overnight flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.
Day 2: Overnight in Johannesburg
Day 3: Saturday, arrival in St Helena
Upon your afternoon arrival at St Helena Airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel - The Mantis St Helena - where you will spend the next seven nights. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore High Knoll Fort where you can enjoy a short Historical tour and amazing views of the island.
Day 4: St Helena
After breakfast you will embark on a boat cruise around the island, where you can spot large schools of bottlenose and rough-toothed dolphins along with turtles, devil rays and whale sharks (when in season Dec - Mar). The cruise offers scenic views of the island’s coastline showcasing some of the old fortifications and outposts that are still standing today.
Day 5: St Helena
Today you will meet Aaron at 09:30 for an orientation of the island by 4x4. You’ll visit Deadwood Plain, the former campsite of the Boer prisoners of war during the Anglo-Boer War, before a short walk to Flag Staff which offers panoramic views of the island. Visit Fisher’s Valley, where Napoleon rode his horse during exile and Levelwood, home of the Bell Stone. Wind down to the southwest point of the island for amazing views of the Atlantic.
Day 6: St Helena
Today you will be taken for a private tour of the Plantation House; this is home to the Governor but also to Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, a giant tortoise at 192 years old! You will also see High Knoll Fort on your way back to the hotel.
Day 7: St Helena
After breakfast, the rest of the day is yours to explore the island at your own leisure. For the evening, a dinner has been arranged at one of the local families’ homes to experience the local cuisine and learn about life and the culture of the island.
Day 8: St Helena
You will be taken on a guided walk through Jamestown; visiting key landmarks including The Castle, St James Church and the famous Jacob’s Ladder that ascends 699 steps above the town and courthouse. Finish the afternoon with a tour of Wranghams house, a beautifully restored country house dating back to the East India Company’s days on the island while enjoying tea on the lawns.
Day 9: St Helena
Today you will enjoy a visit to Longwood House, owned by the French Government, which is one of the best Napoleonic museums in the world. Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to St Helena in 1815 and died on the island six years later.
Day 10: Depart for Johannesburg
After breakfast, you will have time for some final exploring of Jamestown before heading back to Johannesburg for the last night before your departure.
Day 11: Return home from Johannesburg.
