The Valais region is suitable for every customer, thanks to its beautiful nature, the variety of incredible experiences and abundant sunshine (300 sunny days per year). Whether your clients are looking for adventure, culture, relaxation or cultural experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. From panoramic train journeys, to viewpoint experiences, and spectacular hiking and biking paths, they’ll find it in Valais.
What’s the best way to get to Valais from the UK and Ireland?
The best way is by air to Geneva or Zurich airport, then you turn your journey to the Valais into an experience by using the excellent train network. Valais is located in south-west Switzerland at the border of France and Italy, meaning both airports are almost equal distance.
When is the best time of year to visit Valais?
Valais is a year-long destination, boasting 300 sunny days a year.
Valais stands in the middle of the Alps, meaning it’s a high altitude destination. This guarantees us snow during winter, and our winter portfolio not only includes ski, but also a wide range of winter activities going from fondue in a gondola, to excursions off the beaten track, as well as relaxing in the largest thermal destination of the Alps – Leukerbad. To avoid the crowd, January and March are perfect.
But keep in mind, we do not only have summer, but Indian summers in the region. Meaning the season lasts until the end of October.
What are the top things to do in Valais?
- Check out the panorama of the Valais mountains from incredible viewpoint places reached by cable cars: some options for panorama journeys are our various viewpointa in the Aletsch Arena, Saas-Fee/Saastal, Leukerbad or Region Dents du Midi.
- For an incredible ski-experience, keep in mind our 2,000km of slopes, Valais is home to Switzerland’s largest ski-area with Nendaz 4 Vallees, and Region Dents du Midi and Portes du Soleil – the world largest international ski area.
- To break a world record, visit Saas-Fee/Saastal, which is home to the world’s highest underground train (Metro Alpin) and the highest revolving restaurant in the world.
- For the best view of the Matterhorn take the Gornergrat Railway, and the train tickets include entry to the interactive Zooom the Matterhorn exhibition.
- Admire the longest ice stream in the Alps, the Great Aletsch Glacier, which is a Unesco site and stretches over 20km from its formation in the Jungfrau region (at 4000m) down to the Massa Gorge, around 2500m below.
- Relax in the largest thermal spa resort in the Alps – Leukerbad.
- Meet the St. Bernard dogs, emblems of the region, at Barryland in Martigny or at the Grand St. Bernard Pass.
- Explore by boat St-Leonard’s, which is home to the largest natural underground lake in Europe.
- Visit a winemaker at a vineyard or cellar and taste the best Valais wines. Valais is the largest wine growing Region in Switzerland. A top tip for clients is to make a stop at Les Celliers de Sion.
- Savour some of the many gastronomic specialities the Valais has to offer, starting with a Raclette du Valais AOP.

Are there any hot hotels agents should have on their radar?
The Mad Retreat Hotel in Nendaz opened in July 2024. It boasts 45 rooms spread over 25 chalets, all inspired by traditional ‘raccards valaisans’, which are wooden granaries used to store and dry agricultural crops. The spa reserved for hotel guests and features a yoga room, treatment and massage rooms, and vegetarian meals are available,
In January 2025, Revier Mountain Lodge opened in the centre of Saas-Fee in the high alpine holiday region of Saas-Fee/Saastal. The four buildings have a total of 82 rooms, alongside a spacious restaurant and bar area with a concert stage and a lounge with a welcoming fireplace.
Which events in Valais can agents use as a selling point?
Everyone will find something here – as a passive observer or an active participant. Every event is the best in their class. Sports fans, cultural aficionados, music lovers and other connoisseurs will all get their money’s worth. Events are perfectly organised and staged in a wonderful atmosphere, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. A visit to one of the Valais’ elite events is always worth it.

What are your top tips for agents selling holidays to Valais?
Remember, Valais is all about mountains and nature, as we are located in the middle of the Alps. In winter there’s a guarantee of snow, thanks to the high altitude. While autumn in Valais is often synonymous with an Indian summer, with mild temperatures that still allow for many outdoor activities, and it is a magical time for enjoying nature and its colours. There's so much on offer in spring and summer too, from hiking and cycling to mountain biking.
