Around Here, There and Everywhere
From 10 March – 10 June 2027, Around Here will bring together exhibitions focused on the art of Northern California—surfacing little-known histories, celebrating local icons, and tracing the offbeat, experimental spirit that has long defined Bay Area artists and the West Coast ethos. Participating venues in San Francisco include SFO Museum, Haight Street Art Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and more, offering a gateway into the very best of Californian art.
Each organisation will present art exhibitions that showcase the region’s wildly varied cultural life, including new discoveries about skate culture, Funk art, California craft, Bay Area Dada, the Summer of Love, and Zen Buddhism, as well as fresh looks at seminal artists including Dewey Crumpler, Maija Peeples-Bright, Kota Ezawa, Gay Outlaw, Maria Silk, and Catherine Wagner. Visitors will meet unsung heroes, encounter unruly artists who never quite fit the mould, and see how generations of makers have shaped (and been shaped by) the destination. This is San Francisco culture like never seen before, perfect for anyone delving into counterculture history or marking the 60th anniversary of the Summer of Love next year.
Further’s name pays tribute to the bus that seminal American author Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters drove across the United States, pollinating the country with its counterculture spirit. It also exemplifies a broader attitude among artists in the region and speaks to what many artists were searching for when they headed west, a place for those who may not have felt they belonged elsewhere or who were looking for radical freedom of expression and identity. Further invites visitors to embark on a journey to discover something new and unexpected.
