Chirs Godrich on his love for Yorkshire puddings, life on the road and taking his parents to Glastonbury

Describe your typical week?
I spend about four days a week on the road visiting agents, meeting homeworkers for coffee, carrying out in-store training and helping with evening events. I love life on the road and can travel anything up to 600-700 miles per week. I tend to take the train as much as I can, as one of Intrepid Travel’s key focuses is responsible travel and I always try to uphold that where possible.

How big is your sales team?
There are four of us out on the road at any time. We meet up about once a month to talk about how we can make sure we’re reaching as many agents as possible. It’s also a great excuse for us to eat a lot of cake.

What do you keep in the glove compartment?
I’ve always wondered why they are called glove compartments as I don’t know anyone who keeps gloves in there! I’ve got a picture of my dog, Rusty, an Intrepid Loves Agents foam love heart, and a Swiss army knife which takes me back to my tour guiding days. I was a tour leader for four to five years with Intrepid before making the change to become a rep, so I’m definitely used to life on the road.

And what’s on the radio?

I’ve just got a digital radio so I’m really enjoying listening to BBC Radio Six Music at the moment. I can’t wait to take my parents to Glastonbury this year, so when the headline acts have been announced I’m sure those artists will take over my radio.

What fast food outlet keeps you going on the road?
I love Spudulike, especially the cottage cheese and chive topping, but that might just be a northern thing. I’m also still waiting for somewhere to start offering Yorkshire pudding takeaways; I’d be a loyal customer.

What’s the silliest thing you’ve ever done as part of a sales visit?
I once encouraged a group of agents to do the conga around the city centre of Liverpool in fancy dress. Onlookers didn’t have a clue what to make of us.

Who would be your ideal driving companion on a long journey?
Levison Wood, I’d love to hear all his travel stories, and I think he could probably do with being driven around after all that walking too.

What’s your favourite alcoholic drink?
Guinness, because it’s a drink and a meal in one.

What’s the best question an agent has ever asked you? I
I’ve had some weird and wonderful questions over the years. Being asked what continent Morocco is in is up there with the best.

What’s the most lost you have ever got?
I once took the train home from an agent event and made it all the way to my front door before realising that I’d moved house the week before. It was a long journey back home!

Which is your favourite destination that your company sells?
It’s a tough choice as there are so many great places, but I think I’d choose Vietnam for its food, people and history.

What key messages do you try to convey in an agent visit?
I try to dispel the myths that adventure travel is just for the youth market and that you need to be fit and adventurous to go on one of our tours. Intrepid has a holiday for people of all ages and fitness levels, from food to sailing or wildlife-themed tours. No one should be limited by age or physical ability if they want to get out there and see the world. We also make sure that we are talking about our Intrepid Loves Agents portal, where agents can access incentives, training videos and marketing resources.

What’s your advice for agents who don’t currently sell your product but are keen?
Just do it. Our intrepidlovesagents.com website has lots of useful information and we’re always here to give a helping hand with any questions that come up.
