"Luckily as I’m still relatively new to the role, I haven’t had to do anything too silly, however there’s still time…"

Describe your typical week

I’m usually on the road for four days. My area is from the Midlands down so there’s a lot of ground to cover. When I’m with agents I could be doing training, or sometimes it’s just to remind them who I am and show my face. But we’ll always discuss sales and the state of the market together. When I’m not in the office I’m working on admin from home and preparing for my future meetings.

How big is getabed’s on-the-road sales team?

There are three of us on the road. I look after the south; Amanda Leggett looks after the north and Scotland; and John McKibbin looks after Ireland.

What do you keep in your car?

In the glove compartment I have 80s CDs, an Adele CD, a phone charger, face wipes and a load of sweet wrappers (they’re not mine, honest!) On the back seat I’ve got boxes of pens, two jackets and four pairs of shoes – you have to be prepared for all eventualities.

And what’s on the radio?

A mixture of Kiss in the mornings for some car dancing and to get me going for the day ahead, and then a bit of Heart (love those 80s club classics). It’s Smooth for the journey home.

What snack keeps you going on the road?

Bottles of water, tuna and cucumber sandwiches and packets of crisps. I’m not always quite so healthy at home, so when I’m on the road I try and curtail the chocolate habit! Lunch can vary from 11am to 3pm, depending on where I am and what visits I have.

What’s the silliest thing you’ve ever done as part of a sales visit?

Luckily as I’m still relatively new to the role, I haven’t had to do anything too silly, however there’s still time…

Who would be your ideal driving companion on a long journey?

Peter Kay of course – have you not seen the TV programme Car Share? I love his humour. He’d make any journey fly by.

What’s the most lost you have ever got?

I don’t know the roads yet so I’m always getting lost! Although I’ve got a satnav it doesn’t always update quickly enough for my liking when I’ve gone down the wrong road.

Where did you last go on holiday?

I didn’t go on holiday last year as I moved house, however I intend on having several holidays this year to make up for it, starting with Dubai and Majorca later in the year.

Best part of the job?

No two days are the same – I love meeting new people.

… And the worst?

Sometimes when I’m away for a few nights I do miss home. Also the traffic and long hours can be frustrating but ultimately I do love what I do and what an amazing industry to be in.

What key messages do you try to convey in an agent visit?

Brand awareness, our product range and website features plus the fact it’s getabed’s 25th anniversary this year. We’ve got some lovely things planned for agents.

What’s your advice for agents who don’t sell your product but are keen?

You’re missing out on our fantastic products! We’ve been around for 25 years, we’ve got more than 100,000 hotels in 167 countries, we are a B2B company only and listen to all your ideas and suggestions for improvements to our website and documents – so what are you waiting for?
