Switzerland’s Bernina Express is no ordinary train journey. This panoramic rail route weaves through the Swiss Alps throughout the year, and in winter the iconic red train offers unparalleled views of snow-capped peaks, emerald lakes and sparkling glaciers.
The line has been recognised as a Unesco World Heritage site, taking travellers across 90 miles of scenic beauty, spanning 55 tunnels and crossing 196 bridges. It reaches its highest point at Ospizio Bernina, 2,253 meters above sea level.
The train’s main routes travel from Tirano to St. Moritz, which is a two-hour journey, and Tirano to Chur, which takes four hours. Passengers can also travel the route in reverse, or choose to take the panoramic train one way and board a regional train on the return journey.
The Bernina Express is suitable for all age groups, and everyone has an incredible view, thanks to the large panoramic windows. Due to the length of the journey meals aren’t served, however a selection of delicious drinks and snacks are available onboard.

1. The Landwasser Viaduct: a marvel of engineering
The Landwasser Viaduct is the signature of the Rhaetian Railway mountain line, on which the Bernina Express travels. Spanning 65 metres high and 142 metres long, this stunning bridge is one of the most photographed spots on the route, with six soaring arches. The viaduct curves gracefully around the mountain, before the train heads into a mountainside tunnel. It’s a feat of engineering that perfectly complements the dramatic alpine scenery.
2. The Montebello Curve: spectacular views of the Bernina massif
Nestled on the northern side of the Bernina massif, the Montebello Curve provides one of the most breathtaking vistas on the journey. Here, the Bernina Express takes a horseshoe bend, offering a sweeping view of the jagged peaks of the Bernina range and the Morteratsch Glacier below.
3. Morteratsch Glacier: an icy wonderland
As the Bernina Express continues its ascent it reaches the Morteratsch Glacier. This immense glacier, which stretches for more than four miles, is one of the largest in the region. The pale blue ice contrasts with the surrounding snow-covered slopes, giving passengers a rare opportunity to see one of nature’s most powerful forces up close, all from the comfort of their seat.
4. Alp Grum: views to the Palu Glacier
Alp Grum is another unforgettable stop on the Bernina Express, perched high above the Val Poschiavo valley. Here, passengers can admire a stunning panoramic view of the Palu Glacier, one of the most picturesque glaciers in the Alps. The train winds around the mountainside, and the view at Alp Grum provides an uninterrupted look at the glacier as it flows down the mountainside.
5. Brusio Circular Viaduct: a spiralling wonder
The Brusio Circular Viaduct is another marvel of railway engineering and one of the most exciting moments on the Bernina Express. Located just before the train reaches Tirano in Italy, this nine-arched, stone spiral viaduct allows the train to navigate the steep incline with ease. Customers should expect epic views, as the surrounding mountains and valleys change dramatically as the train loops around.
