Hurtigruten Group’s expedition brand, HX, has put its plans to start operating voyages to West Africa on hold owing to "increasing levels of instability in the region".

A 15-day "Northern Lights and Fjords Expedition" round-trip sailing from Dover to the North Cape has departures between October 2021 and March 2022

Maud will return to Hurtigruten's fleet later this year from is expedition sister brand HX

HX had added Cape Verde, Dakar (Senegal), Banjul (Gambia) and the Bissagos Islands to its product portfolio for 2023/24, but has now pulled back from the launch.

"Previously, HX had expanded its product portfolio to include West Africa for the 2023/24 season," said the brand in a statement.

"However, due to increasing levels of instability in the region, HX has elected to pause its operations for the upcoming season to ensure the safety of our guests and crew."

Hurtigruten, meanwhile, will welcome Maud back to its fleet later this year on secondment from HX while it continues with its ongoing programme of environmental upgrades to its ships.
