The travel body issued a statement today (Tuesday) stating that it was “in the process of consulting with members to raise awareness and understanding of the key considerations and possible implications for the travel industry of a UK exit from the EU”.
It added: “Our role is to ensure that all of our members are as well-informed as possible on the key facts and considerations, ahead of what will be an important, but ultimately personal, decision.”
As part of the process, Abta said it would be producing a report, set to be launched in mid-March, “to encourage members to think about the potential impacts to their business, and the industry more generally, of the UK leaving the EU.”
The report will examine the ways in which a “Brexit” could affect the travel industry, UK holidaymakers and business travellers from broad economic impacts to specific regulatory changes.
It comes as prime minister David Cameron continued talks with Europe this week, in a bid to produce draft deal aimed at keeping the UK in the EU.
If Cameron can reach an agreement in February, he is expected to call a referendum in June to decide on whether Britain should remain in the EU.
