The plane had been heading for Misrata in Libya when it crashed - the country’s worst aircraft accident suffered in peacetime, officials said.
Passengers at the airport were reportedly taken to a safe area, according to Sky News.
Malta airport’s website shows most flights as being delayed or cancelled, with a number of arrivals diverted elsewhere.
