Co-Founder Jill Waite said “at least” 100,000 jobs were at stake when the government scheme finishes at the end of this month.
“The majority of travel businesses are facing a huge challenge at the end of September. We need everyone in the travel industry to unite in demanding sector-specific support,” she said.
“Some of the trade bodies and travel leaders have gone quiet in the last few weeks. We need all of the trade bodies spending every minute of every day getting the message across to the chancellor and the government.”
Graeme Brett, another Target co-founder, said furlough’s end on 30 September meant “a cocktail of financial pressures” that would see business closures and job losses “on a massive scale”.
Other financial pressures included repayments for business loans taken out during lockdown plus payment of deferred VAT and redundancy costs amid a substantially reduced summer season income.
“We need all of the travel Industry to hammer home the message to the government,” he said.
