The company said that fewer than 1,000 posts would now be axed, compared to an original plan to cut 2,900 jobs, if a deal can be struck with unions.
Air France-KLM chief executive Alexandre de Juniac said that the job reductions in 2016 would now be on a voluntary basis. He added that higher job cuts in 2017 could also be avoided if the airline reached agreement with unions over other cost-cutting measures.
Five Air France workers are facing charges following violent protests during a meeting about the job cuts at the airline’s headquarters near Paris earlier this month. These employees are due to appear in court in December.
Air France is set to discuss the job cuts with unions at a meeting of its works council on Thursday.
