Airlines cancel 4,400 US flights as winter storm hits

More than 4,400 US flights have reportedly been cancelled after the country was hit by, what forecasters are calling, a "bomb cyclone"

Around 2,350 flights were cancelled on Thursday (23 December) and another 2,120 were scrapped on Friday (23 December).


According to Reuters, Southwest Airlines cancelled 865 flights on Thursday (22 December) – about one-fifth of all its scheduled flights – and another 550 on Friday (23 December).


A quarter of departing flights at Chicago’s O’Hare airport and 37% of flights at Chicago Midway have been called off, while 27% of departing Denver flights had been cancelled.
