Unseasonably dry weather means many resorts are already having to rely on snow cannons to ensure visitors can get their skis on.
However, if there is no snow by the weekend, The Times is now reporting resorts in the Haute-Savoie region will be banned from using mains water supplies to make the fake snow.
They will still be able to use water from mountain reservoirs, although many of these are severely depleted after heavy use over the Christmas period.
The ban would see more than 50 resorts affected including Chamonix and Morzine.
