Clients are choosing to take to the world’s rivers in favour of cruising the open ocean, according to the agency, which says new customers have been drawn in by the more intimate atmosphere that river cruising offers.
Barrhead’s cruise director Catriona Parsons said: “River cruising is growing in popularity with Barrhead Travel customers, with bookings up by almost one-third compared with last year.”
Parsons said Portugal “appears to be the place to be for river cruising”, with sailings along the River Douro “selling out fast”. The more traditional Danube, Rhine and Rhone rivers remain popular, while those looking for more ‘off-the-beaten-track’ experiences are opting for Asia.
“Many of those opting for river cruises previously booked ocean cruises, while 41% of customers are completely new to the cruise market,” she added.
“These customers are looking for adventure and authentic experiences coupled with fine dining and great quality accommodation.”
She continued: “River cruises are much smaller than ocean cruises, yet travellers still enjoy fantastic food and entertainment while taking in a number of fabulous locations and sites en route.
"It’s easy to understand why at least three-quarters of customers who embark on a river cruise will re-book another one soon after they return.”
