A British-led company has been chosen to design a new international airport serving the Red Sea, forecast to handle more than one million tourists and visitors annually by 2030.
The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) has awarded the contract to Foster + Partners and its sub-consultant WSP Global.
Work on the new airport in Saudi Arabia, which will be able to handle up to 900 international and domestic passengers an hour, is expected to be completed during 2022.
It is part of TRSDC’s broader Red Sea Project, the first phase of which also includes the construction of up to 14 hotels providing 3,000 rooms across five islands and two inland sites, as well as commercial, retail and leisure facilities, and other infrastructure.
Through 2030, the project will deliver up to 8,000 hotel rooms across 22 islands and six inland sites.
