A delegation from NYC & Company visited the UK this week to update trade partners on the destination’s latest developments, including an exclusive Facebook Live event with TTG.
Reginald Charlot, managing director, tourism market development, at NYC & Company, said the city forecasts to have welcomed 801,000 UK visitors by the end of the year, edging back up towards the 1.3 million recorded pre-pandemic in 2019.
“The Brits are back,” he said. “The streets of New York City are jam-packed with Brits, and the recovery has been tremendous.
“We’re here to really re-introduce ourselves to the marketplace. After a gap of two or three years we wanted to come back with a bang, bringing seven of our partners, and remind travel agents what’s new and exciting about New York City.”
The trade delegation included representatives from the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Hudson Yards, Arthouse Hotel, Beacon Hotel and the Downtown Alliance.
More than 10,000 additional hotel rooms are slated to open over the next two years, while Broadway will see 18 new shows debut this autumn.
But Charlot said while the city’s iconic attractions and central areas are as popular as ever, some UK visitors have also been keen to experience the city in new and slower ways.
“We’ve focused on pushing the five boroughs of New York City for some time, encouraging visitors to go to the Bronx, which is the greenest borough in NYC, to go to Brooklyn to experience Prospect Park, to visit the little hidden gem of Staten Island – but that’s resonating even more for visitors post-pandemic,” he explained. “It’s about encouraging visitors to explore a little bit more, to be outdoors, do something different, and see different parts of the city.”
A new series of “Get Local NYC” guides help visitors explore the city’s five boroughs like a local, while a new diversity-focused series of travel guides explore Black, Latino, and Asian experiences of NYC, alongside a new halal travel guide, and updated visitor information for the LGBTQ+ and accessible travel markets.
