Since January, a build-up of around 100,000 Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders has seen tensions of a potential conflict escalate in the region.
“British nationals currently in Ukraine should leave now while commercial means are still available,” the FCDO said in a statement issued late on Friday (11 February).
The FCDO added it has temporarily withdrawn some British embassy staff and their dependants from Ukrainian capital Kiev.
It said that while the embassy remains open, it would be unable to provide in-person consular assistance and urged British nationals to leave while still able.
A spokesperson said: “The safety and security of British nationals is our top priority, which is why we have updated our travel advice.”
According to flight data analyst Cirium, 3,776 scheduled flights took place in January from European airports to Ukraine.
From the UK, there were 98 flights scheduled to Ukraine and this month, three airlines – Ryanair, Wizz Air and Ukraine International Airlines – continue to operate flights to the country.
