Consumers are showing a “heightened appetite” for booking more sustainable holidays, according to a new global report from WTTC and Trip.com, which also owns Skyscanner.
The survey found that 69% of travellers were “actively seeking” more environmentally friendly travel arrangements which can reduce their carbon footprint and support sustainable tourism.
It also found that nearly 60% of respondents have chosen more sustainable travel options in the past couple of years, while a separate poll revealed that around three quarters of high-end travellers are willing to pay extra to make their trips more sustainable.
Despite concerns about inflation and the cost of living crisis, around one third of travellers (31%) are also looking to spend more on international trips this year than they did in 2022.
Julia Simpson, WTTC’s president and chief executive, said: “The demand for travel is now stronger than ever and our report shows that this year we will see a significant bounce back. 2023 is set to be a very strong year for travel and tourism.
“Sustainability is top of travellers’ agenda, and consumers highlight the value they put on protecting nature and travelling responsibly.”
The report also used data from consultancy Deloitte to highlight the strong demand for travel globally in 2023.
Scott Rosenberger, Deloitte’s global transportation, hospitality and services sector leader, added: “Even the rise in inflation-driven financial concerns is not slowing the pace; incredibly travel is being prioritised and flexible/remote work arrangements are creating new opportunities.”
