Cyclone Mocha battered Myanmar’s Sittwe region yesterday afternoon (14 May), and current projections suggest it will track north-east through Chin State, Magway Region, Sagaing Region and Kachin State.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the storm is "intensifying rapidly" in the Bay of Bengal and continues to threaten the coastal areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The WMO forecasts winds of 180-190 kmh, as well as heavy rainfall with the possible risk of floods, flash floods and landslides.
The very strong winds are expected to cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, including roads and airports.
Travellers have been advised by the FCDO to prepare for interruption to power and water supplies, as well as disruption to communications.
"The situation could deteriorate significantly, and our ability to provide assistance may be limited," an FCDO spokesperson added.
"You should ensure you have your own contingency plans in place, and avoid unnecessary movement around the country. Transport routes are likely to be affected, including airports."
According to The Guardian, around 1,000 people who were trapped by seawater 3.6 metres deep along western Myanmar’s coast have been evacuated.
